Hey, It's Okay

Hey, it's okay...

... to be excited have joined a group for moms of little ones in order to make new friends in the area. Hey, when you're an introvert with social anxiety, you do what you gotta do!

... to love snow... but only when you don't have to go out in it. We got about 8-9 inches of snow on Saturday which is a lot for our area. It looks beautiful though!!!


... to be undecided about going to a play date organized by MOPS today. The above two statements are mainly why... I had a lot of fun at the MOPS meeting, but it remains cold and snowy here today!

... to feel anxious about basically moving to my parents' house for a couple of weeks. My dad is having knee replacement surgery and cannot be left alone for two to three weeks. Being a SAHM means I got drafted to be the one to stay home with him. As it would require me to be gone from about 6:45 am to 6:00 pm every day, we decided it would be easier to just stay with them for the duration. However, it takes a lot of stuff to travel away for two to three weeks with my husband, my six month old, me, and our dog!!!

... to be excited our half bath is almost finished being remodeled! We did the demolition of it and removed everything from the room on April 7th. On Sunday, my husband finally got around to installing the vanity light and mirror. Now we're just waiting on our special order door to be installed (Menards let us know it's in, we just need to pick it up), the last bits of trim to be put back in, and any decor to be hung and it's complete! Oh, trying to remodel with an infant is so easy!

Mothers of Preschoolers


My husband and I bought our house almost two years ago now. We moved into an amazing community which is almost halfway between both sets of our parents. This community has an amazing school district and plenty of stores, restaurants, and activities for children. We live about two blocks from a huge park where the town's swimming pool is located. These reasons are why we chose the house we now own. The only downside to our town, however, is I don't know many people.

When I was pregnant, my husband and I decided I would stay home with our baby and any future children until they are all in school. I posted on Facebook with our decision and asked for advice on how to meet other SAHMs in my area. My sister-in-law recommended trying out MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). A cousin seconded going to MOPS and said she had been to our local group previously and it was awesome.


After that discussion, I started looking into MOPS. I joined the Facebook group for my local meeting. According to Facebook, this was about 9 months ago. My son was born in mid-July. When my husband went back to work a month later, I tried to talk myself into going to a meeting. It was the perfect time as it was a new year for MOPS which runs from September to May.

I am an introvert and deal with social anxiety. I couldn't bring myself to go. Every month, I would psych myself up about going and then back out. After doing some reflection, I determined this was because I was afraid of the unknown. I had never been to the church where the meetings are held. I didn't know where to park or where to go once in the church. I didn't know anyone there.

After figuring this out,  I decided to message someone in the group. There is a lady named Heather who seems to do most of the administrative duties for the Facebook group. I sent her a message last month and told her my dilemma. She jumped to help! She said if I was interested in coming to the January meeting, we would work something out. Someone could come to my house and get me or I could follow someone to the church. I agreed with this and was so excited to finally be able to attend a meeting.

Last Monday, Heather messaged me and asked if I was still interested in attending a meeting. I said I was definitely interested. I also told her I didn't think I needed a ride or to follow someone as long as I had an idea of where to go at the church. She sent me a bird's-eye view of the church and showed me where to park and what doors to enter. She said there would be someone at the front doors to meet me and direct me where to go. I thanked her.

The meeting was on Thursday and I'm proud to say I attended. I was a little anxious, but definitely excited about going. Thursday, I got up a little early in order to get ready. I got the baby ready and we headed to the meeting. I was greeted at the door by a mentor mom. These are moms with years of experience (read grandmother aged). The mentor mom lead me into the church where I was greeted by Heather and another mom. Heather took me to the meeting room which was actually at the back of the sanctuary. She lead me to her table and showed me where to sit along with where the "cry room" was.

I immediately took the baby in there because he needed a diaper change. This is a funny story, but the baby went from having a bowel movement (or multiples) every day to not going at all. It was an instant switch and worried his dad and me. We contacted his pediatrician who said to do a glycerin suppository if he hadn't gone in about ten days. We did this and he went. Another 5 days passed and he was acting miserable so we did another... and he went. We decided not to do another and see what happened. By the day of the meeting, it had been about a week since he had gone. When I changed his diaper before we left the house, he had a bowel movement on his own! I was excited, and got him changed. By the time we got to the church, it was obvious he'd had another one. It was a monstrosity of a bowel movement and I had to change his diaper on a little changing table in the crying room of the church. Luckily it didn't get on his clothes, but it was messy and disgusting. Haha! I was flustered due to being at a new location and dealing with a mess of that size, but I got him cleaned up and went to the meeting.

Another mentor mom named Nancy sat next to me and talked to me throughout the whole meeting. She even held the baby for a while. I wish I had known they serve breakfast at the meetings because I ate before I went. They had bagels with cream cheese, donuts, fruit, what looked like a casserole of some sort, coffee, and juice. Those are just the things that I know they had. I didn't have anything. I was given a welcome folder with registration information and forms to fill out. I was told the meeting I went to was free as it was a trial, but if I decided to return, I would need to pay the registration fees.

We discussed friendships: what your best friend is like, what your best friend in high school was like, what you need in a friend, how can you be a better friend to those close to you, how you can be a better long distance friend, how to make new friends, etc. I found the meeting to be very informative and awesome. I was glad to hear a lot of the women in the group are in the same shoes as me when it comes to meeting new mom friends.

Overall, I loved the meeting. I felt very welcome. Oh, we did a words of affirmation exercise where an index card with your name on it was taped to your back. People came around and wrote on your card. The cards were filled with positive things. It was the first time these women had met me, but my card was full of so much positivity and love!


I talked to my husband at lunch about the group, and I decided to join. I am so happy and excited to see what this group does for me when it comes to making mom friends... and how I can be of service to the group and its other members. I'd recommend checking out the MOPS group nearest you if you are a stay-at-home mom looking to have some adult interaction from time to time!

Wellness Wednesday


While my husband was home over winter break, we were discussing our health. We have both gotten into the habit of eating whatever is easy to grab, not caring about the quality of the food or its impact on our health. We decided to start with a healthier eating lifestyle on January 1st. The first day of the new year made a lot of sense as we had a bunch of unhealthy food in the house along with a couple of events planned where we wouldn't be able to control what we were eating as easily.

I have read the blog of Katie at Runs for Cookies for years now. The best piece of advice I've gotten from reading her blog is to not make any diet or lifestyle changes you aren't comfortable doing for the rest of your life. We didn't want to start with anything too crazy as we wouldn't be able to stick with that long. We have two goals for now:

  1. Actually plan out our meals so we have healthy meal options available.
  2. Add in healthy sides with our main dishes so we end up eating a smaller portion of the main dish and, therefore, less calories. 

Overall, we've been doing a great job of following this plan. We have gone out to eat a couple of times, but have been able to keep from going overboard. We had planned to get a meal out from Dairy Queen last Friday. We calculated all our calories and everything, then my husband went to get our food after work and they didn't have what we wanted. That was a disappointment, and I ended up being over calories for the day, but not by a ton.

I've been trying to make healthier choices when it comes to snacks as well. I have been very bad at grabbing the quick, unhealthy snacks we have around like mini muffins, streusel cakes, and stuff like that. The past couple of weeks, I've started eating cottage cheese and pineapple or homemade protein snacks (a small serving each of peanuts, ham, and cheese). I have had a muffin pack here or there and cereal has become a popular snack for me this week, but I'm very pleased with the choices I've been making.

We weighed ourselves on January 1st and weighed in again today. My husband is down a little over a pound and I lost almost three pounds! I'm so proud of us for sticking with these changes thus far and cannot wait to see what changes we continue to make for our health going forward.

Hey, It's Okay

Hey, it's okay...

... to have planned to read 75 books this year. Last year, I read 67 books. I figure I can read a few more this year! If you're on goodreads, feel free to add me! I vowed to follow the reading plan below this year. I have no problems reading more than twelve books in a year, but I like the idea behind this plan. I hope I can follow through with it!


... to have lost my blogging mojo when my husband was home for winter break this year. It's hard for me to sit down and write a blog when I can be spending time with him instead. I'm writing this entry while my kid naps next to me.

... to be thankful for baby naps. My son has started not sleeping as much during the day. I'm lucky I still get two short and one long nap throughout the day from him still.

... to be going to my first MOPS meeting this week. I've been trying to go since my son was born over the summer, but haven't been able to make myself go. My anxiety makes it weird to go to places I've never been alone. I reached out to one of the ladies who is managing the group on Facebook and she has volunteered to help get me there this month. She has a friend who is willing to come to my house so I can follow her in. I told her I don't know if that's necessary, but just a map of the huge church where the meeting is held would probably be helpful. I'm excited to meet some more stay-at-home moms in my area!

... to have finally bought a Nintendo Classic. I wanted one when they first came out, but then the price jumped super high due to demand. I put it on the back burner for a few years and saw someone post a knock-off on Facebook marketplace last week. I brought it up to my husband and we searched. I was pleased to find them in stock at several retailers at a good price. My husband and I decided to split the cost as a Christmas present to ourselves. It was delivered today. I have it mostly set up, but am unable to plug in the HDMI cable on the back of our TV because it's mounted and too heavy for me to get off the wall. I can't wait for my husband to get home and finish setting it up!!!

January Currents



Nothing like posting my second currents late. Haha! New Year's Day, my husband and I relaxed and didn't touch the computer at all. Since then, I've been dealing with a busy, happy, attention-seeking infant so... there's that.
  1. Current book.
    I am reading a book series called Their Vampire Queen by Joely Sue Burkhart. It's free with my Kindle Unlimited subscription. I saw it as a sponsored post in my Facebook timeline. The series would be vampire erotica, pretty much. While I'm not a huge fan of erotica, I am enjoying the story lines in the books. I'm currently on the third one. I basically skim or skip over the numerous kinky sex scenes as I don't like reading about a girl having orgies with a bunch of men every dozen pages or so, but I am enjoying the books overall. They're a nice easy read which I need right now.
     
  2. Current music.
    I really haven't been listening to a lot of music lately. Right now, I'm hearing the silly songs on my son's playmat. When I listen to music, I usually stream Pandora onto the TV in the living room. I listen to a station Pete (my husband) created and shared with me. The music on it is all music I like which is great!
     
  3. Current TV show.
    I got caught up on Outlander yesterday as I had five episodes to watch. I enjoyed getting caught up, but I feel so bad for Roger! Poor, poor, Roger. After that, I binged the newest episodes of Fuller House. I watched Full House when I was younger, so I enjoy the remake... relaunch... whatever you want to call it. Today, I watched the two-hour series finale of Timeless. I enjoyed that show so much! I'm going to miss it. I'm now watching Chicago P.D. on Ion with their marathons. I haven't watched a lot of episodes of this show, but I do enjoy it.
     
  4. Current film.
    Pete and I watched Avengers: Infinity War on Netflix last night. I was working on some other tasks like balancing our checkbook when he started watching it so... I may have to watch it again myself, but I love me some Marvel movies!
     
  5. Current website.
    I would have to say MyFitnessPal, right now. Pete and I agreed to start logging our food again beginning on January 1st. We hadn't been and we were both gaining weight which isn't ideal. We're mainly concentrating on logging our calories and making healthier choices. As a blogger I've read for a while said, don't make any changes you're not willing to stick with for the rest of your life... so, that's what we're doing.
      
  6. Current blog.
    I haven't really been reading blogs as much lately. One I always enjoy reading is Airing My Laundry. I started reading her over a decade ago! It's so crazy. I've "watched" her kids grow up. She's a military wife and is totally honest in the things she writes about.
      
  7. Current app.
    Going along with the current website, it would be the MFP app. I love that you can scan the barcodes on your food and it pulls it right up. It makes is so much easier to log your food when you can just scan everything!
      
  8. Current project.
    I am not in the middle of any projects though I really want to get some yarn and crochet hooks. I need something to keep my hands busy sometimes and crocheting looks like fun to me! I put some stuff on my wish list for Christmas, but didn't get anything so I'll have to buy it myself if I want it.
     
  9. Current relationship.
    The growing one with my son. He's five and a half months old now and is becoming so funny. His dad was home with us for a week and a half over winter break. Pete went back to work yesterday, so it's just my son and me home again on the weekdays. I love this silly baby!
     
  10. Current outfit.
    I'm wearing dark gray cotton pajama bottoms with a black nursing tank and a wine red cardigan sweater... oh, and light gray house slippers. The style of a SAHM. I know you're jealous. Haha!
     
  11. Current clothing thoughts.
    Really... just that I need to get my eating in gear so I can fit into my clothes better. I don't wear them often, but when I do, my jeans are slightly tight and my shirts don't fit right anymore. I have a ton of clothes and don't want to have to go buy bigger clothes because I'm eating too much.
     
  12. Current self-image thoughts.
    I'm actually feeling pretty good about myself regardless of my weight gain. I'm still basking in the glory of my body creating and birthing my son; of my breasts being able to nourish and feed him for his entire life thus far. A woman's body is an amazing thing!
     
  13. Current guilty pleasure.
    Well, if I had written this yesterday, I would have said Oreo Truffles. I made some for New Year's Eve and my parents are the only ones who came over so we had several left. I ate about five of them yesterday even while logging my calories. They were so worth the calories though! Yum!
     
  14. Current food.
    I just ate a raspberry mousse yogurt. It was very tasty! The yogurt was my attempt at not eating worse snacks... like a ton of chocolate. I'm trying to make better choices when it comes to the calories going into my body.
     
  15. Current drink. Water. I've still been drinking chamomile tea (which is what my drink was last month), but right now I'm trying to increase my water intake again. I got back into the habit of drinking sweet tea, lemonade, Sprite, and juice instead of water during the day. The last two days, other than a cup of tea in the morning, I've drank water all day.
     
  16. Current feelings.I'm excited for the new year. I love each new year as it seems like a clean slate in life. Who doesn't need a clean slate for something? This is also the second year my son has experienced and I'm excited for the milestones coming up (crawling, walking, talking, eating solids, etc).
     
  17. Current wants.My son to be able to entertain himself for longer than 20 minutes so I have the chance to finish a blog post! Right? I'm supposed to be writing my Thankful Thursday entry, but I'm so late on posting my currents that I'm skipping that for today.
     
  18. Current needs.
    More sleep! The baby slept almost 12 hours straight the night before last and he napped wonderfully yesterday. However, last night, he was up three times overnight and has barely napped today. He's requiring a lot of attention which means no naps for mommy.
     
  19. Current annoyance.
    My lips are super chapped. It happens every winter and I'm tired of the cracked, bleeding, dry lips! It's terrible.
      
  20. Current triumph.
    Sticking to this lifestyle change for two and a half days so far. I'm normally really bad at slipping up since I'm home where all the food is... *fingers crossed* I hope I can stick with it!
